NEWS
Patti Wachtendorf has been named the first female warden of the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison. This is where Patti started her career in corrections; she is eager to return. She is grateful for the relationship she has enjoyed with FIWP. We also are grateful and wish her well!

Sheryl Dahm has been named to replace her. You may remember her as Sheryl Lockwood. She has held several positions with the DOC and at ICIW. Over the years, she has attended many FIWP meetings.

PROGRAM/FOCUS
We welcome to our first meeting of 2017 the Rev. Lee Schott, pastor of Women at the Well at ICIW, and her staff: the Rev. Paul Witmer, minister of congregational care; the Rev. Dan Schott, administrative assistant; and the Rev. Brenda Hobson, reentry coordinator. We look forward to hearing about the ministry of this vibrant congregation.

RECAP OF DECEMBER 2016 MEETING
In December, we were privileged to have Legislators Marty Anderson and Janet Peterson share with us their concerns and hopes for the 2017 Iowa Legislative session.  Janet served six terms in the House and has now been elected to her second term in the Senate.  She encourages us to get to know the new committee chairs.  She also encouraged us to have State Treasurer Mike Fitzgerald explain the college savings program “529” that might be available for women getting out of prison.

Marti Anderson is the Representative in Janet’s district.  She worked with victims for 28 years as well as on offender issues.  Marti’s commitment is to fairness.  Every year she argues for ICIW.  Prison law reform is important to her.  She worked with Carlos Jayne early in FIWP history.  During the legislative session she meets every Monday with those who gather at  Grounds for Celebration in Beaverdale from 8-10 a.m.

UPCOMING PROGRAMS
In February we welcome members of the Iowa United Methodist Legislative Advocacy Team to share with us what’s happening at the 2017 Legislative session. REMEMBER: Legislative Advocacy Day will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church on Tuesday, February 7.
