Scholarship Program

In an effort to advocate for long-term change for individual femal offenders, we are funding and encouraging higher education for women while they are residents in the Iowa correctional system.

The Iowa Department of Corrections has resources to fund only the costs associated with a high school equivalency degree (GED).  College credit courses are available to prisoners, but they must pay the cost themselves.  Most lack the funds to pay tuition and buy books.  Federal educational grant programs are not available to them.

Friends of Iowa Women Prisoners (a Sec. 501(c)(3) organization) is raising funds to assist individual women with costs associated with college level courses.

We accept applications for educational assistance from women in prison.  A selection committee reviews the applications and awards scholarships to women seriously pursuing an educational goal that will help prepare them for employment.
