Peggy Urtz is retiring. There is an Open House in her honor on Thursday, November 3, from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. at the Fresh Start Women’s Facility, 1917 Hickman Road. Cameron Gowdy has been named the new director.

PROGRAM/FOCUS
It’s my pleasure to introduce our new Treasurer, Marlys Hocker and our Scholarship Team, consisting of Joyce Knock and Sr. Sandy Rodemyer. Our thanks again to Rosemary Jungmann, who did a magnificent job of handling these responsibilities for the past six years.

In October, we welcome Dr. Jerome Greenfield, Iowa Department of Corrections (DOC) psychiatrist. Dr Greenfield is an Iowa native from Guthrie County. He went to Drake for his undergraduate education in biology, then to the University of Iowa for medical school. He did his psychiatric residency at the University of Kansas. He was in practice for 25 years–most of those at Mercy-Des Moines. He has been with the DOC for two years and now is the Director of Mental Health Services for the State of Iowa DOC. He is married to Dr. Peggy Greenfield, and they have three children. He enjoys competing in triathlons, camping, hiking and genealogy research.

Warden Patti Wachtendorf will join us later in the hour to answer any questions we may have for her.

RECAP OF SEPTEMBER 2016 MEETING
In September, we honored our founder and other long-time members. In 1992 (corrected date) after the Citizens Advisory Board at the prison was dispensed with, the Rev. Carlos Jayne called together a group of people to consider forming “Friends of Prisoners at Mitchellville.” Originally, Mitchellville is where all incarcerated women were located. Years later when some of the women needed different services, they were sent to Mt. Pleasant. The name of the group was then changed to “Friends of Iowa Women Prisoners.”

Over the years several persons have been faithful in attending and fulfilling leadership roles. Along with Carlos Jayne are Jean Basinger, Irv Hofbauer and Dianne Fagner. It was our joy to honor them.

UPCOMING PROGRAM
In November we welcome Jamie Strasser Ross.
