Treasurer – Rosemary Jungmann

PROGRAM/FOCUS:

We welcome State Senator Jack Hatch to our December meeting.   Senator Hatch has served in the Iowa Legislature for 22 years, first in the House and now in the Senate, and is currently seeking the democratic nomination for governor.

He has been a leading progressive voice in Iowa throughout his career, advocating for civil rights and social justice, as well as spearheading reform efforts on expanding access to children’s healthcare and Medicaid.  He also implemented improvements to our education and healthcare delivery systems and has worked on mental health reform.  He has served as a White House advisor on state-level healthcare reform.

In his private life Senator Hatch is a property developer with projects in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids.

RECAP OF NOVEMBER 19, 2013 MEETING:
Our thanks to Samantha Tucker, volunteer coordinator at ICIW, who was our November presenter. She began working at ICIW in April 2012 and loves her job. Samantha is responsible for the volunteer program, safety for the institution, offender grievances, and is the backup person for records. It is such a diverse job, she couldn’t imagine doing anything else.

The volunteer statistics amaze Samantha. There were 2800 volunteers in the data base when she started. The next volunteer training is scheduled for two months following the move. If the move occurs in December the training will be in February, if the move is in January the training will be in March. (Those visiting prisoners are not allowed to volunteer.)

The Slumber in the Slammer overnight offer was accepted by 93 participants and many, many staff volunteers. In the near future there will be a new website “mitchellvilleprison.org” that will list volunteer needs.

As volunteer coordinator, Samantha offers a comprehensive email newsletter, edited by Kristin Fegerland. You may email Samantha at Samantha.tucker@iowa.gov to be added to the list.

The ICIW “Kiwanabees” had a fundraiser that raised $425 for tetanus shots for those living in 3rd world countries.

UPCOMING MEETINGS & PRESENTERS:
Our January 21st presenter will be Jerry Foxhoven, Executive Director of Drake’s Legal Clinic.
