To bring together and inform individuals and groups concerned about women in the Iowa correctional system and to act on their behalf.

INTRODUCTIONS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

REPORTS:
ICIW Report – Warden Patti Wachtendorf or ICIW Representative
Treasurer – Rosemary Jungmann

PROGRAM/FOCUS:
Our July presenter is Renee Schulte, former Iowa legislator and mental health therapist. She spear-headed the passage of mental health and disability services (MHDS) redesign in 2011-2012. Currently, Renee has a unique opportunity to consult with the Mental Health Division of the Iowa Department of Human Services to implement the reform policy. Her work on MHDS reform won nine awards including the Iowa Mental Health Counselor Association award for bipartisan leadership 2012, the Gold Star Award from Iowa Sheriff’s and Deputies Association 2012, and the Iowa Hospital Association Legislator of the Year 2012.

Renee is the owner of Schulte Consulting LLC, which offers strategic planning in mental health, healthcare, legislative process and environment. She is married to Brent, the discipleship pastor at Antioch Christian Church, and lives in Cedar Rapids.

RECAP OF JUNE 17, 2014 MEETING:
It was a pleasure having Marty and Stephanie Fawkes-Lee Ryan as our June presenters. They focused on three issues. The first issue was restitution and how a County Attorney garnished all the income from the woman serving a life sentence at ICIW and the letter to the editor Carlos Jayne submitted addressing this problem. The second had to do with the restraints bill and why it failed to progress through the Iowa House. The third was using body scanners instead of strip searches.

UPCOMING MEETINGS & PRESENTERS:
In August we will continue a mental health theme with Teresa Bomhoff, chairperson of the Iowa Mental Health Planning Council and President of the National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) of Greater Des Moines.

Teresa is a trained educator in the following NAMI programs – Family to Family, Provider Education, 30 Pearls, Hearing Voices, and Parents and Teachers as Allies. She has also completed the training course for Psychological First Aid, and is a trainer for Mental Health First Aid.
