MISSION STATEMENT
INTRODUCTIONS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

REPORTS:
ICIW Report – Warden Patti Wachtendorf or ICIW Representative
Treasurer – Rosemary Jungmann

PROGRAM/FOCUS:
This month we welcome the staff from the Treatment Unit at ICIW.  The unit has four pods each with approximately 48 women.  One pod is used for Pre-treatment to help women achieve a mind-set to help them be open to treatment.  There are two pods for treatment– the 9 month (STAR — Sisters Together Achieving Recovery) and 6 month (WISH – Women Inspiring Sobriety Health) program.  The fourth pod is for Aftercare, where women serve as mentors to those going through treatment.  The staff will share with us their role in helping women achieve success.

RECAP OF APRIL 15, 2013 MEETING:
In April we welcomed Latrice Lacey, lobbyist for the ACLU.  Latrice talked with us about action and lack thereof in the 2014 Legislative session.  There was animated discussion about the practice of shackling of pregnant women when transporting to and from Iowa City during labor and delivery.  Reference was made to articles in the Des Moines Register by women who had this experience.  Terry Walker and Rosemary Jungmann agreed to work on an article on this subject to be submitted to the Des Moines Register.

UPCOMING MEETINGS & PRESENTERS:
The June speaker is yet to be determined.

Our July presenter is Renee Schulte, former Iowa legislator and mental health therapist. She spear-headed the passage of mental health and disability services (MHDS) redesign in 2011-2012. Currently, Renee has a unique opportunity to consult with the Mental Health Division of the Iowa Department of Human Services to implement the reform policy. Her work on MHDS reform won nine awards including the Iowa Mental Health Counselor Association award for bipartisan leadership 2012, the Gold Star Award from Iowa Sheriff’s and Deputies Association 2012, and the Iowa Hospital Association Legislator of the Year 2012.

Renee is the owner of Schulte Consulting LLC, which offers strategic planning in mental health, healthcare, legislative process and environment. She is married to Brent, the discipleship pastor at Antioch Christian Church, and lives in Cedar Rapids.
